Amber can be a highly prized resource in the scientific community. Subsequently, when thinking of how to preserve one’s family history and heritage, the concept of encapsulating familial items in amber itself came to mind. Begging viewers to question whether these taxonomies—indirect portraits of family—would be as equally valued and preserved otherwise.

This series makes use of sentimental family items (set outside of my parent’s home) which were photographed digitally, then converted into analog (Van Dyke Brown) prints, were hand torn and finally cast in amber-dyed resin. The finished pieces were then photographed in one of the manners in which amber is naturally found—by the beach.
